OUR HISTORY Accuro Health Insurance began as Hospital Service Welfare Society in August 1971. Established in the Wellington offices of the Hospital Board's Association, in the old DIC building on Lambton Quay within six months membership had reached over 3,000. The first Annual Report noted that benefits paid amounted to $ 147.79! A modest start. Established as a vehicle providing comprehensive health cover to those workers employed by the 30 national Hospital Boards Health Services Welfare Society grew very quickly. HSWS provided a wide range of benefits to members as well as providing "free membership" to student nurses, and offering a range of plans to new members. In 1989 HSWS changed its name to Health Service Welfare Society, being an acknowledgement of the changing structure of the public health system as area health boards replaced hospital boards. Over the next 20 years HSWS continued to grow quickly. Utilising the knowledge gained from membership with a wide range of the health professionals the level of benefits offered to members continued to increase. The comprehensive nature of the plans was always tempered with the need to ensure "value of money". In September 2007 Health Service Welfare Society extended its offer providing comprehensive cover at a competitive price to members of the public. The new name Accuro Health Insurance was selected. In Latin, Accuro means "taking care". Accuro Health Insurance continues to go from strength to strength, building on the foundations of three decades of service to its members. The 100% not-for-profit membership organisation is focused on providing the most comprehensive health insurance cover at the best price while delivering outstanding service.
